Foundation

Founded in the summer of 2007 by Head Coach Tim Shaffer, and Leslie his wife of 15 years, Summit Youth Sports provides a year round opportunity for young women of any skill or experience level to improve their basketball training in a nurturing relational atmosphere. Women’s basketball has exploded in the last generation at an astronomical rate. Summit wants to assist young student-athletes to exploit the possibilities open to them through sport by maximizing mind, body, and spirit to excel at their highest level of potential. Summit also gives detailed training and attention to both individual performance and team concepts. These objectives are developed in an instructional and competitive environment that will enhance not only a player’s skill level but their relational team building skills as well.

The name Summit Hilltoppers is derived from Coach Shaffer’s basketball experience and geography. Summit associates our club with the high point of excellence, the Rocky Mountain Region, and the Denver Metropolitan area (elevation 5280 feet). Coach Shaffer coined the nickname “Hilltoppers” after his alma mater Western Kentucky University, an institution steeped in great basketball tradition. You can read more about Coach Shaffer’s background and passion for hoops in his upcoming book Daughter’s of the Hardwood, a collection of life’s lesson learned from coaching girl’s basketball. Excerpts will be featured in a basketball blogspot; look for it on the Links page in the near future.

The Summit Logo presents an open triangle representing the freedom to ascend and excel beyond victory. The triangle’s 3 points also encompass the synergistic three fold mindset of mind, body, and spirit. Three also reminds us of the 3-point shot which helped revolutionize modern basketball to new heights since its inception in 1983.
